William Hall was born in Tynemouth, North Shields, Northumberland a 17 year 6 month old labourer he attested for the 11th Regiment of Foot at North Shields 23 November 1859. Hall served 21 years 231 days with the Regiment all as a Private soldier not awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal three times imprisoned for absence, Good Conduct Pay forfeited four times.
Hall served in India from 16 July 1864 to 26 March 1870 the second time from 25 November 1871 to 12 April 1877, third time from 13 January 1878 to 28 July 1880, Afghanistan 29 July 1880 to 8 May 1881, India 9 May 1881 to 20 December 1880 when he returned to the UK. Discharged 22 October 1881 to pension.

Francis Hamilton Martin was born in Northgate, Canterbury, Kent an 18 year old groom and serving member ofthe 3rd Volunteer Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment Martin attested for the Grenadier Guards in London 27 May 1891. Serving with the 3rd Battalion at Home Martin was transferred to the Army Reserve 26 May 1898 and was recalled to the colours on the outbreak of the Boer War 10 November 1899.
Posted to the 2nd Battalion Martin served in South Africa from 3 January 1900 to 21 July 1902 (Kings Medal two clasps) the two clasps on his QSA Medal verified correct. Finally discharged 25 May 1903.

Mark Wilkinson was born in Pinchback, Spalding, Lincolnshire an 18 year 9 month old Railway Porter he attested for the Grenadier Guards at Stratford 6 October 1900. Wilkinson was awarded his Mounted Infantry Certificate 6 February 1902 and served in South Africa with the 2nd Company Guards Mounted Infantry from 7 February 1902, returning to the UK 5 October 1902. Transferring to the Army Reserve 6 October 1903 he was finally discharged from the Army Reserve 5 October 1912.

Charles Tombs was born in Malvern, Worcestershire 15 March 1877 a labourer he entered the Royal Navy at Vivid II 19 July 1897 as a Stoker 2nd Class. Tombs joined HMS Doris 18 November 1897 and was discharged dead from the Royal Naval Hospital, Simonstown 8 October 1900 the result of an accidental gun shot wound. The verdict of the Coroner's Jury was 'Accidental death caused by a bullet from a rifle', suggesting he shot himself.

Arthur Smith was born in St Mary's, Huntingtonshire a 20 year 3 month old labourer almost 6 feet tall he attested for the Grenadier Guards at Nottingham 17 October 1898, his two older brothers are noted as serving with the Bedfordshire Regiment and Royal Horse Guards. Smith served in South Africa with the 3rd Battalion from 12 April 1902 to 6 October 1902 and transferred to the Army Reserve 10 October 1902 being finally discharged 16 October 1910. His home address is recorded as Manor Cottage, Barnston, near Nottingham.
